Accidental Death

Additional Covered Person or ACP:

The Primary Covered Person may choose to add the following family members to be covered under the Plan:

Sanlam considers a wider family member to be:

Relationships to you:

  • Spouse as defined above where you have more than one spouse, or your spouse falls outside the age requirements for a spouse, the additional spouses can be covered as wider family members;
  • Parent as defined above where you have more than four parents, the additional parents can be covered as wider family members;
  • Child as defined above where you have more than eight children or the child falls outside the age requirements, the additional children can be covered as wider family members;
  • Parents-in-law are the parents of your spouse;
  • Aunt who is the sister of your father or mother, or your uncle’s female spouse;
  • Uncle who is the brother of your father or mother, or your aunt’s male spouse;
  • Brother who is your parent’s male child;
  • Sister who is your parent’s female child;
  • Brother-in-law is the male person married to the child of your parents;
  • Sister-in-law is the female person married to the child of your parents;
  • First cousin who is the child of your aunt or uncle as defined above;
  • Son-in-law, the male person who is married to your child;
  • Daughter-in-law, the female person  who is married to your child;
  • Nephew is the male child of your brother or a sister;
  • Niece is the female child of your brother or sister;
  • First cousin’s child who is the child of your first cousin
  • Grandchild who is your child’s child; or
  • Great Grandchild who is your grandchild’s child.

Relationships to your spouse:

  • Aunt who is the sister of your father or mother, or your uncle’s female spouse;
  • Uncle who is the brother of your father or mother, or your aunt’s male spouse;
  • Brother who is your spouse’s parent’s male child;
  • Sister who is your spouse’s parent’s female child;
  • Brother-in-law is the male person married to the child of your spouse’s parents;
  • Sister-in-law is the female person married to the child of your spouse’s parents;
  • First cousin who is the child of your spouse’s aunt or uncle as defined above;
  • Son-in-law, the male person who is married to your spouse’s child;
  • Daughter-in-law, the female person  who is married to your spouse’s child;
  • Nephew is the male child of your brother or a sister;
  • Niece is the female child of your brother or sister;
  • Grandchild who is your spouse’s child’s child;
  • First cousin’s child who is the child of your spouse’s first cousin; or
  • Great Grandchild who is your spouse’s grandchild’s child.  

These relationships must be in place when cover is applied for.

Adult Brothers and Adult Sisters:

Refers to your adult biological, legally adopted or step brother and/or sister older than 18 years last birthday.

Beneficiary:

The person that you (the Primary Covered Person) nominate to receive the benefits on this Plan if you die. If the Primary Covered Person does not nominate a Beneficiary, then the claim payment from the Plan will be made into the Primary Covered Person's Deceased Estate. A Beneficiary is usually someone who is one of your dependants (a spouse, child or parent) while you are alive. A Beneficiary can also be the person who will be responsible for paying for your funeral in the event of your death.

Cash:

This word refers to the South African banknotes and coins required to pay the Plan Premiums in cash.

Child(ren):

Minor Children (children younger than 21 years)

All your Minor Children (younger than 21 years at the time of their death) are covered automatically under this Plan. Minor children include:

  • your biological children
  • your legally adopted or step-children
  • grandchildren (younger than 21) for whom you are financially responsible and who have been living with you for 12 months or longer
  • your common law children (those children whose deceased parents may or may not be related to you, and if you are such children’s permanent, primary caregiver and they have been dependent on you for the last 12 months or longer, before the Commencement Date of the Plan).

If a Child is born or is adopted by you after you have started the Family Funeral Plan, the Child will be covered for Accidental Death only from the date that you add them to your Plan. S/he will be covered for Death by Natural Causes only after the 12th (twelfth) month after they have been added to your Plan. This Plan does not cover stillborn children in the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Minor Children are covered automatically on the Family Funeral Plan.

Adult Children (children 21 years and older)

Adult Children are children older than 21 years last birthday, at the time of their death. They may also be covered under this Plan. Please note that each Adult Child will be listed as an Additional Covered Person under this Plan.

Claim:

In the event of death of the Primary Covered Person, a Beneficiary or, if no Beneficiary has been nominated, the person in charge of the Deceased Estate, must request that Sanlam pay out the Cover. In the event of the death of the Partner Spouse/Partner or Child, the Primary Covered Person will make the Claim.

Cooling-off Period:

The Primary Covered Person may cancel the Plan within one month of the Commencement Date. To cancel the Plan, contact The Sanlam Contact Centre on Sharecall 0860 426 837 (0860 icover) to inform us that you wish to cancel. Sanlam will then refund the Premium already paid, less expenses and costs incurred in respect of the Plan up to cancellation.

Commencement Date:

This is the date on which the Primary Covered Person registers and pays the first premium online. Cover begins on this date.

Cover:

This is the amount of money that will be paid under the Sanlam online Family Funeral Plan on the lives of the Primary Covered Person and Additional Covered Persons in the event of a valid Claim.

Covered Person:

All persons covered under this Plan, including the Primary Covered Person and all Additional Covered Persons.

Death by Accident:

An accident is an unforeseeable event that occurs after the Commencement Date and which, in a violent, external and visible manner, independently of any other cause, directly results in the death of a Covered Person within 90 (ninety) days of the Accident taking place.

Death by Natural Causes:

Death by causes other than Accidental Death, but excluding suicide.

Estate or Deceased Estate:

Your estate is the sum total of assets that you own at the time of your death. These assets are administered by your executor to settle your debts and pay the balance to your heirs.

Exclusions and Excluded Activities:

Instances where Sanlam will not be obliged to pay out where a Covered Person dies as a result of the Excluded Activities. The Exclusions are listed in the Membership Certificate.

Sanlam online Family Funeral Plan:

The registered name of this product from Sanlam, and under which the Members are covered.

Grace Period:

A maximum of ONE month is allowed for the payment of a Premium from the due date of the Premium, after which the Plan will automatically be cancelled.

Parent:

The legally recognised parent or guardian of a Child.

Parent-in-law:

The legally recognised Parent of your Partner Spouse/Partner.

Primary Covered Person or PCP:

The person who is the legal owner of the Family Funeral Plan and in whose name the Plan is registered. S/he is the Primary Covered Person and registers the Plan on his/her life and the lives of his/her family members (known as Additional Covered Persons on this Plan). The Primary Covered Person is automatically the Beneficiary on the lives of the Additional Covered Persons under the Plan.

Policy Document:

The Policy Document comprises a Schedule of Benefits, Terms and Conditions, and general information for the Primary Covered Person. This Policy Document will be updated every time amendments are made to the Plan.

Policy Number:

This is the unique number generated by the Sanlam system. It is present on the Policy Document.

Plan Cancellation:

A Plan is cancelled when the Primary Covered Person decides that s/he no longer wants the Plan. Plan Cancellations are made by calling The Sanlam Contact Centre on Sharecall 0860 426 837 (0860 icover).

Premium:

This is the amount (in South African Rand) that the Primary Covered Person needs to pay every month to maintain the Plan. The Premium is paid by bank debit order. The Premium payment is due at 30 day intervals.

Premium Payment Day:

The day of the month that your Premium is due for payment. If you commenced your Plan and paid the first premium on the 15th July then your next premium will be due on the 15th August, the 15th September etc.

Plan Term or Duration:

This is the period of time for which the Plan is valid and the Cover is active, provided the Primary Covered Plan pays the Premiums regularly as required.

Spouse/Partner:

The Primary Covered Person's legally recognised husband or wife or permanent partner or civil union partner. The Spouse/Partner must have a valid South African Id number and be older than 18 years at the Commencement Date. Sanlam will only allow a maximum of 1 (one) Claim to be submitted on the life of a Spouse/ Partner under this Plan. Example: If you have two Spouses or Partners, you must register only one Spouse/Partner as a Member of the Plan. If the registered Spouse/Partner dies, they will be covered if all Terms and Conditions of the Plan are met. If someone becomes your Spouse/Partner after the Commencement Date of the Plan, they will be covered for Accidental Death only from the day that you register him/her as your Spouse/Partner on the Plan. S/he will be covered for all causes of death after 12 (twelve) months from the day they have been added to the Plan.

Waiting Period:

This is the length of time (i.e. 12 months) from the Commencement Date of the Family Funeral Plan that all Covered Persons are NOT covered for Death by Natural Causes, and are covered for Death by Accident only.
